Ying-Ying And The Racquetball Court// April 29, 2012 // Model: Ying-Ying Lin// MUA: Justine Marie Corner

Since I started becoming serious about my pursuit of becoming a fashion photographer, I think one of the most exciting things for me has been becoming more observant of the fashion industry and therefore more informed and conscious of why things excite me and the reasons why I decide to bring in certain elements into the photographs I take.

Over the past couple of months, I have noticed sports and athletics as influences in fashion, both in context of images and in the way clothing is designed, styled and worn. What first ticked my interest was seeing Willy Vanderperre’s amazing group image of Givenchy’s SS 2012 collection in a basketball court. It was the unlikely yet beautiful combination of the gowns with the decorative tribal jewelry and the backdrop of a basketball court and gym lighting. Then came the Spring collections. Designers like Stella McCartney (nothing new), Chloé and Alexander Wang showed influences from neckline and silhouette to mesh jerseys and athletic jackets. It all came full circle and became clear as something I wanted to explore.

Shot at a racquetball court in Seattle Central’s gym, I was very happy with how the images came out. Considering my model was an old classmate from high school who I hadn’t talked to since graduation and hadn’t really done anything like this to the fact that I was toying with the photo faux pas of shooting with gym lighting, I couldn’t be happier with the results. Ying-Ying was so great to work with and took direction so well and Justine did an amazing job with the hair and makeup, both ladies helping my vision come through completely. A win for the home team (ha!).
